Weekend Getaway: Williamsburg, VA

As one weekend begins, I'm remembering moments from last weekend. My dear friend Kathleen (aka Cassie) and her family visited my family at our grandmother's house. We are both into thrifting and had a mini-photo shoot with our outfits which are 100% thrifted/gifted.  Cassie's signature item is skinny jeans. These are Hollister and she paid less than $5 for them. My outfit: Shirt & pants: Hand-me-down, Belt: Thrifted, Shoes: Prada/Gift from a friend.

On Sunday, we took the ferry from Surry to Jamestown which directly leads to the always lovely downtown Williamsburg. Our favorite place to hang out is Merchant Square which is right in the midst of Colonial Williamsburg and the College of William & Mary. The square was alive with shops, restaurants, arts and craft vendors, live music, and a car show. We could have spent hours just walking around, soaking in the sights and sounds.

It was pretty hot so we planned ahead by wearing cool dresses, comfortable shoes, lightweight cross-body bags, and sunglasses.

Nothing like some tasty frozen yogurt and green tea fraps to complete a near-perfect afternoon!

These Pradas were meant for walking...

.....down memory lane. This weekend I received my very first pair of Prada shoes from a dear friend. She received them as a gift but unfortunately they did not fit. One girl's misfortune is another girl's lucky day and I am extremely grateful for her thoughtfulness. I'm a bit over the moon about it so to debut these fantastic shoes, I decided to pull out some vintage dresses compliments of my mother and grandmother.

The navy dress is one of my favorites of my grandmother. Her waist was ridiculously small so I have to be careful with my breathing. :-)

The second dress is a conductor's dream. If I ever do a 1940s/1950s themed concert, I am definitely wearing this!  Love the sheer material in the front for a sexy retro feel.

My mother went to a private boarding academy in the 1970s and this was her class dress that she wore graduation weekend. I love how the vintage flower print is set against mint which is very trendy right now.

Lastly is a dress my mother wore as a newlywed in southern California circa 1980. I like how this dress could be worn with flip-flops at the beach or with these heels for something fancier. I tinted the left photo to look like pictures in my mom's old photo albums. :-)

Bohemia Lane Part 2

May was a hard month to dress in. Cold one minute, hot the next. With a little hippy/Bohemian/Gypsy inspiration, I managed to find a few arrangements that were ready for either temperature.

This is about as classic as it comes. JC Penney peasant blouse circa 1999, classic jeans from Ross, and my mom's leather sandals from the 1970s.

 

This was just plain fun to put together. I was considering giving this shirt to Goodwill but then decided to make one last effort to include it in an outfit.

 

However cute these shoes are, they are also extremely hard to walk in. Therefore, I decided to switch them out for these classic red heels which are by far my favorite summer dress shoes.

Canadian Camoflauge Part 2

Considering it is June, I figured I better hurry up and write part 2 of our Canadian adventures!  I did not save the best for last but this will give you an idea of other aspects of the trip.



 We only saw the sun once or twice in Montreal so unfortunately I don't have any photos of that. Here is a view overlooking the city.









Day 1: Downtown Montreal

It was raining and cold so I opted for a black lined rain coat, scarf, hat, jeans, and socks with knee socks. Not necessarily high fashion here but this ensemble did help me stay functional and blend in with the locals.

Day 4: Montreal Symphony

I left my favorite black skirt on my bed at home so I ended up using a long skirt which I hiked up under my sweater and borrowed a belt from a student to camouflage any wrinkles that might have showed through. The skirt ended up a little shorter than I wanted but it worked for the symphony. I tried to stay neutral and play up the accessories; the scarf pulls the plum tights and green belt together.
